I've admired Boris' sheet metal Glock frame: http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/build-yourself/214022-iron- glock.html

The "stars and unicorns" version is well on its way to becoming an internet classic... though the bicycle tape variant has a certain "git-r-done" vibe.

Boris found an airsoft Glock shell that would accept his welded frame. But if you use the frame idea for something else, or you don't necessarily want your scratchbuilt frame to look like a Glock, you're out of luck.

I just realized that this is one of the few places a conventional plastic-string 3D printer would be useful for a gun builder, and the workpiece is within the size limits of most hobby printers.

Just use something like the David 3D scanner to make an .STL file of the outer shape of your frame, then import that as a core or armature to your 3D software. Then print your outer shell directly onto the steel frame.

The only big potential problem I can think of would be you'd need to make sure your favorite gun solvent isn't also a solvent for whatever plastic you used for the shell, but that's no big deal.
