Any time I've seen two vets meet, they inevitably start playing "where were you stationed" and "do you know so-and-so."

Military acquintances tend not to be deep, but as people get shifted from base to base, they get *very* wide. "Six degrees of separation" in the USAF is probably closer to two degrees... a couple of phone calls, some Facebook, and any vet will have a background check tighter than an FBI security investigation.
