Back 30-odd years ago when I first started reading him, he was one of the very few people writing about self defense. You had "kill the goblins!" Cooper and "kill them all!" Skelton, plus a handful of people who were nutcases even compared with those two. Ayoob was like a beacon of reason, and he also talked about what would happen after you pulled the trigger.

Since then, we now have legal CCW in most of the country, a LOT more people carrying, new attitudes from police and courts, and a lot more people doing deadly-force training. Ayoob has been doing this a long time... that gives him authority and credibility, but it also means that he formed a lot of his opinions long ago, and that changing his stance on controversial opinions can cost him some of that credibility, which is how he makes his living.

He has sufficient credibility for me to spent a lot of time considering what he says... but in then end, I make my own decisions. That's one of the reason I look askance at the people who push training courses so hard; you're not making your own decisions, you're buying someone else's. And if you had the ability to know if they were valid or bogus, you wouldn't need a course.
