I walked into a pawn shop the other day and saw a Springfield 1911A1 GI model picked it up and well to make a long story short I traded a Para GI Expert ESP for it and I noticed it was didn't have little to no oil on it so I field stripped it, oiled it and noticed that the thumb safety was real stiff and I was just wondering if this is normal and will loosen over time or should I take it to a smith? Oh yeah and the gun is new.
You want the thumb safety to be "stiff." That minimizes the opportunity for the safety to be unintentionally engaged or disengaged.
The "stiffness" is controlled by two factors: the strength of the plunger spring, and the depth of the detent into which the plunger "snaps" when the safety is engaged.
I understand that and also the plunger tube keeps the slide stop from going in and I use the "up and in" method on all my other 1911s and I can't do this with this one. I have to use a fine screw driver to press the plunger to get the slide stop in.
This could be the result of a SS with a malformed aft end (see the blueprints in out Tech issues section, 14th link down) or a SS plunger that extends too far:
If the plunger extends too far, there are also blueprints for it, the plunger tube and the frame to help you figure out why. All this assumes you've removed the plungers & springs to make sure there's no crud in the plunger tube.
Springers have pretty stiff plunger springs.
You can change the plunger and spring or you can do some judicious smoothing/stoning of the thumb safety or better yet, since it's brand new, measure the trigger pull weight (cause it's likely too heavy) shoot several hundred rounds through it to be sure all is functioning well, then call Springer to adjust trigger pull weight if it's over 6 pounds (I'll bet my bottom dollar it is) have them adjust the trigger pull weight as well as a list of any other concerns you have... like the very stiff thumb safety.
Ah hi. Did you by any chance take the saftey out to inspect it. It could a multiple of reasons why it is stiff... rule out things like atight pin hole, alinment, sear engagement problems, plunger problems. It just might need some LIGHT oil and working it but pull it out and inspect it first.
