I have a Sig 1911 Tac Ops (not the railed version) and I want to start customizing it. I have been carrying it for a while, and it prints quite a lot. It's to the point where I was at Target with my 5 year old and was approached by an older gentleman asking about my 1911. I had a flannel shirt over my gun, and he was still able to see it well enough to make an educated guess as to the style of weapon.

Now I'm thinking of putting a rounded MSH on. I am a machinist, so setting up a little milling project would be a joy, but my issue is that I don't like the Ed Brown MSH's that I've seen. they look too squared off to me. I REALLY like the rounded MSH on the Kimber Custom line, but can't seem to find any available on Gun Broker or in Brownell's. I'm pretty new to the 1911 world, so I don't know a lot of resources. I've also checked the Kimber website, to no avail.

The point of this post? Where can I find a nicely rounded MSH for my 1911?

Don't take this the wrong way, but maybe you need a better concealment holster or carry in a different position if it prints "that" much with a loose fitting flannel shirt.

The Ed Brown bobtail cuts the whole corner off. It's noticeably shorter on the corner than any rounded MHSings I've seen.

The problem is that there's just not a lot of material there for rounding off. The commercially-available "bobbed" MSHs are able to be as short as they are because they actually raise the height of the MSH retainer pin and they use the internals from an Officers ACP MSH. If you track down the 1911 blueeprints over on our Home Page site and look at the cross-section through the MSH, you'll see that you can't round off very much before you cut into the bore where the mainspring rides.

I don't know of any rounded MSH's for sale. When I wanted one, I took a standard MSH and cut it down with a Dremel and files.

I also suspect the older gentleman was trying to do you a favor by approaching you. When I "make" someone carrying, I let them know discreetly, because I figure they don't want to be made, and would appreciate the chance to change things up a bit to improve concealment. I'd certainly appreciate it if someone did that for me.

Thanks guys! RobL, I understand that he was doing me a favor, and I didn't take it as an assault. It took it as an oppourtunity to improve my weapon. Cap, you too are right. My holster isn't the greatest (it's a Tagua, made in Paraguay) bit it was available, and relatively inexpensive. A better holster would do a LOT, I know, but I'm looking for an excuse to customize this pistol. I have an issue with leaving things alone (my motorcycle is a great example: torn apart every winter).

I'll look into it a little more

I can tell you don't want to hear it, but here goes. Get a better holster. "Flashing" your ccw pistol is grounds for the state pulling your permit in many locations. As far as customizing your pistol, have at it. If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

I've had the same thought as the OP. Are there any main spring housings that are setup for use with the officer's innards but retain the stock square shape? This way someone could round it off as much or as little as they like. And if there isn't one, why not? It's a good idea after all.

Hawkmoon If this works, here's a copy of the cross-section of the MSH from the 1911 blueprints. Note the two holes on the bottom. The larger hole, directly under the spring bore, is for the MSH pin. The small hole is for a lanyard loop retainer pin.

This may give you some idea how much rounding you can do before you start filing air.

Tagua makes a lot of different styles.

Don't let price fool you

I own one and imHo, there one of the better "off the shelf" holsters .

Every bit as good as my Galco.

As good or better than my DeSantis, Don Hume and Blackhawk leather

If you don't have a gun "belt", you need one.

It may also be just a matter of changing the carry position to an area that fit's "your" body best.

for "me", that's strong side carry in the appx 3 to 4 O'clock position

OR... just being more aware and ever conscious of how your shirt is hanging

I won't tell you the very first week I started carrying, I took my jacket off in a restaurant and my shirt was on the WRONG side of my pistol frame
