Keep in mind I don't know anything about metal finishing, so this is a very noobie question. If I want to get a gun chromed, can I take it to and place that does general chroming or are there specific processes/ tolerances when finishing a fire arm?
The hard chrome used on guns is a different process than the decorative chrome plate that most plating companies do. Some plating companies may do hard chrome, but there may be legal aspects if they do not have an FFL.
I would deal with a company that has years of experience with firearms.
I didn't even think of the legal ramifications.

Accurate Plating & Weaponry
Great web link. Thanks. They have a great explanation to my question.
Word. Accurate Plating & Weaponry is the final word in chrome, IMO. I've never seen anyone do as good a job as them. I have my dad's Fusion I just built him down there now for chrome, and I'm sending them mine next. You can find others that do great work, but I truly think they're the best in the world for chrome
You might consider bright nickel - this is what gun makers use when they want a highly-polished finish on a plated gun. Of course the gun has to be polished first which will degrade the markings to some extent. The alternative is a matte-plated finish, or 'dull' nickel, in which the gun would be lightly blasted all over.
Brushed electroless nickel would be a good alternate to hard chrome.

Electroless nickel is excellent; inquire here: www.RobarGuns.com
(only places I trust with finishing --consider THAT word-- MY guns are AP&W and Robar)
Might I respectfully cast a vote for these folks as well?

Been in the refinish business about as long as anybody, NOTHING but first rate work!
This one's been abused, neglected, and SHOT for over 25 years since they laid the chrome on it!
