I got my new slide in today and went right to installing it when I noticed that the ejector does not fit in the slide. I have read about lowering the ejector, but mine won't fit into the grooves.

I'm sure the answer is just to fit the ejector, but that would require removing almost half of the top rail.

Are there different sizes of ejectors?

I went from a full size slide to a Commander. Here's a pic of the ejector hitting the slide.

I always wondered what the molecular structure of a 1911 looked like!

Looking at the picture I am thinking its one of three things;

1. The slide is mismachined.

2. The ejector is off spec.

3. The holes for the ejector on the frame are not where they are supposed to be.

Try the slide on another gun to see if it fits. That will tell you if the slide is to spec. Next, compare the position of your ejector to the position of the ejector on the other gun. Are they the same?

I'm sure you probably already knew this stuff, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. By looking at the pic I would say that we are not talking about minor fitting of the ejector, but rather somekind of out of spec part. :(

Easy fix

There are two different ejectors out there. Stock one for 45 and one for the 9mm/38super.

Many Commander slides use the 9mm/38 Ejector so thats probably what you need to fix your problem.

I was looking out on brownells and I did see the other ejector. My next question was will the one for the commander 38/9mm work with 45acp. I guess blindhogg answered my question. I'll get one on order.

It's always the things you don't think of. A good learning experience though.

I've also found that my Colt Series 80 slide and ejector are differently placed than all of my Series 70 slides and frames.

For example, I cannot get a Series 70 slide on my Series 80 frame, nor my Series 80 slide on a Series 70 frame. ALL of my "non Colt" (ODI, Essex, KT, unknown, probably Asian company) parts match up to the Series 70 stuff.

You are right, this is a Series 80 slide on a Series 70 frame. I went ahead and filed the ejector down so that it would fit.

Now I have noticed that my new barrel is ramped, the old one was not. The ramp is hitting the frame and won't allow the slide to move back far enough for the slide release to be inserted. It's about a 1/4 of an inch off.

HAHAHA I love this stuff! I'm finding out how much I don't know.
