I'm about to make a 0% 1911 frame, and I have a question about a thread size. I'm using a *.pdf file as my print, that I got from this forum. I understand everything on the print, except for the call out for the 2 holes that hold the GRIP pads on. It calls the holes out to be (Dia. 0.236-60NS-2) Does anybody have any idea was size thread this is? I've looked and looked, but I can't find a tap for this anywhere. Is this a mistake on the print? Or can I use some other size.

Hi there, the holes that you are working on are for the grip panel bushings. The thread size is .236" in diameter with 60 threads to the inch for a pitch. you will need a 7/32" tap drill and you can get the tap from Brownells pn.080-598-236 . I just went to their site and did a search for "grip bushing tap" and got all that i needed. BTW a 0% 1911 sounds like a tall project keep us informed as to how things go.

I went to Brownells website and I've got a question about what I have found. It's as follows:

SPECS: Blued steel. Screws - .150"-50. Bushings - .236"-60. Taps - High speed steel. .150"-50 (screws), .236"-60 (bushings). Use 7/32" tap drill for bushing; #31 tap drill for .150"-50 screw.

I haven't bought the parts set yet, so I have no idea what size screws come with the grips. Are they the 0.150-50? And then after your pistol gets worn, you can use this kit from Brownells to over tap the hole to a 0.236-60? I'm just confused, since the print that I have call the holes out to be 0.236-60. So I guess what I'm wanting to know is....what size thread do you guys use for the grip panels?

I hope I get to start my 0% 1911 at the end of this week. I've almost got it completely programmed. My brother just has to get the 3-D work for all the curves programmed, and I'll be ready to start. I'm going to take pictures along the way so you guys can see how it's going. The one thing I'm really worried about is the magazine well. I'm thinking I'll drill the round part of the mag well and then rough mill the rest out the best I can... and then use a file to finish the inside of it out. Do you guys have any input for me about this?

You don't need the 150-50 tap. the bushings come pre-tapped and the screws will go right in.

Be very careful with the alignment of the 236-60 tap because it is an extra fine tap you should use a tapping fixture or a drill press but HAND turn the spindle (power OFF) this will keep everything straight.

I think this is what you are asking about. The grip screw bushings screw into the .236-60 holes you tap into the frame. Most grip screws are .150-50 thread, and the inside of the bushings is that size. When you put on your grip panels, you set them over the bushings which locates them, then hold them in place with the grip screws.

A few of the clones, Llama for one IIRC, don't use grip screws that are .150- 50, they look to be about 8-32, although I never actually measured one.

I got it now. It's just that the only 1911 that I've ever seen apart is the custom pistol that I have. And it's a steel frame with no bushings. But I understand what I need to do now.
