I've been told that I'm compulsive before so please forgive me...
I have a custom Springfield that's probably had 250 rounds +/- fired through it. Chambered in 9x23 Winchester if that makes any difference.
When cleaning, I noticed that the forward edges of the barrel lugs have some uneven wear. There's even a tiny lip formed in a couple of places on the leading edges, protruding up toward the top of the slide. I can just barely feel the lip dragging a fingernail across it.
Is this a problem that I should have Springfield's Custom Shop address?
I had repeated failures to return to battery at first which a very slight push with my thumb took care of but that's pretty much gone now. Barrel lockup is very tight.
My only other 1911 is a Kimber CDP Pro II. The barrel fit in that pistol is much looser but there's no wear like this at all.
My 9x23 LW Commander did the same thing. But, only with the 9mm barrel I had fitted. I was using a 14lb recoil spring. My smith installed a 16lb spring and he deburred (actually de-sharpened) the locking edges in the slide. He used one of those wooden handled thin wire looking tools. I don't know what they are called. Took him about 60 seconds to do it. Has not "curled" the barrel lugs since. Probably 3500 rounds. I dressed the lugs on the barrel to remove the "lip".
When I was doing research on Norinco model 1911s someone said to look for that. Could mean that the timeing is off the poster said.If not fixed damage to barrel and slide.
I agree, the barrel timing is off. You should check the slide lugs also. A high pressure round like that develops good velocity so barrel dynamics will indicate timing issues quick. I'd send it back.
Thanks guys. I was afraid it might be a lock-up/timing issue too. I'm going to send the pistol back to the Custom Shop anyway for an arched MSH and new front sight anyway, so I'll ask them to check it out. Just wanted to see if you all thought it could be a problem.
Magnumite - you're right about 9x23 Winchester developing very high pressure. Max of 55,000 psi vs. only 21,000 psi for .45 Auto. Probably much more sensitive to timing issues than .45 Auto.
BTW the slide lugs look perfectly clean to me.
FWIW the SAI Custom Shop recommended 9x23 Winchester to me - I'd never heard of it before but asked about alternative calibers for a 1911.
Yeah, your upper lugs are showing signs of lug flanging. It's not acceptable, especially for a custom fit barrel. Let them take care of it.
My SA UC and Longslide show a very small amount of upper lug flanging only on the left side of one lug. It's stock. I've shot just a few hundred rounds and it appears it's not getting worse with each shooting so I'll just leave it for now.
Just continue to shoot the blazes outta' that thang from China whatsisface.
